Equal Opportunities

Cholsey School is fully committed to the principles of the Disability Discrimination Act, Equal Opportunities legislation, and the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000. We are committed to promoting equality of opportunity; promoting good relations between members of different racial, national, cultural, and religious groups and communities; and to eliminating unlawful discrimination.

The school is opposed to all forms of racism and xenophobia, including those forms that are directed towards religious groups and communities, including travellers. School policies supporting these views can be obtained from the school Admin. Officer. You may be asked for personal data for use for monitoring purposes under this legislation.

Special Educational Needs
Special educational needs are those which may deny children maximum access to the curriculum and extra-curricular activities in school. These constraints may be either one or a combination of the following: physical, social, emotional, behavioural, sensory or intellectual.  We value all children as individuals and they are all entitled to a broad, balanced and relevant education.

We, as a school community, are fully committed to inclusion and make every effort to welcome and accommodate all children.

We aim to identify any problems as early as possible so that the appropriate strategies may be put in place.  If you have any worries about your child, please speak to the class teacher.

The school is supported by and has access to a wide network of specialist teachers and other professionals who can be called upon to help individual needs when children need it.

How are we making sure we are meeting the learning needs of individual pupils?

We treat all children as individuals, including those who are gifted or talented or who have special educational needs. We use a variety of measures to ensure that the teaching they receive is most suitable for them, for example by grouping children, by offering them different activities and extra support within the classroom and by withdrawing individuals for 1:1 support as appropriate.

We have a team of highly experienced and trained Teaching Assistants who are led by our Special Educational Needs Coordinator in delivering intervention programmes for those having difficulties, particularly in English or mathematics. Our recent Local Authority Audit of SEN provision was very positive, praising the ‘inclusive ethos of the school and ability to include pupils with high level needs effectively’.

Opportunities are offered to children with specific gifts or talents in the classroom, through clubs and through joint activities with other local schools.
