Our School

"Our mission is to prepare children for the future,
through academic excellence and individual care."

play-areaAt Cholsey Primary School, our aim and purpose is summed up in our mission statement: “To prepare children for the future through academic excellence and individual care”. We are a caring and happy school that encourages everyone, both children and staff, to give of their best.
We seek to create and support a culture where everyone is a learner, and lifelong learning is a feature of the school. We aim to deliver high quality teaching, where all children can access and engage with a broad, balanced curriculum that addresses their interests, provides appropriate challenges and is differentiated according to their needs. We welcome and encourage the involvement and the support of parents, other adults in the community and visitors.

kidsplayingOur vision for Cholsey Primary school is based on a foundation of core values which include respect, honesty, caring, tolerance, courage, co-operation, unity, happiness, quality and appreciation. They form the basis of the social, intellectual, emotional, spiritual and moral development of our children. These values, along with other moral, aesthetic, intellectual and social mores are addressed through specific lessons, assemblies and acts of worship, but we also embed these ideals throughout the whole curriculum. We encourage the whole school community to take greater responsibility for their own behaviour, actions and learning. We lead by example and demonstrate to the children that we care for them, have a positive perception of them, understand their feelings and listen to their views. We strive to create a positive climate for all within the school, where everyone is valued and respected and where disrespectful attitudes and actions are challenged whenever they arise. It is important, as the children grow up, that they learn to choose, develop and deepen their own positive values and consider the implications of their choices in relation to themselves, the communities of which they are a part and society at large.

Therefore, we believe that the measure of a well-educated child is not only academic success. We feel strongly that a child who has been well-educated can demonstrate a range of skills, qualities, attitudes and abilities which enables them to function successfully within a variety of communities and as part of a fast changing world. They should be able to:

  • be enthusiastic and positive learners;
  • try new things; actively look for challenges and responsibilities;
  • be confident and not afraid to be wrong, learning from their mistakes and setbacks;
  • communicate ideas;
  • ask relevant questions;
  • make connections between knowledge and new information and transfer skills to unfamiliar contexts;
  • work considerately and constructively as part of a range of groups and communities;
  • consider the views and opinions of others;
  • work independently;
  • evaluate their own progress and learning.

    In order for these skills and attitudes to be developed, establishing and supporting the right environment for effective learning and teaching is crucial.
